space missions is to keep the compo-nents of a particular system
within permitted temperature limits, in all modes of operation and
in environments subjected to thermal conditions previously stated.
In the development of thermal control systems facing the space
applications initially high thermal conductance devices known as
heat pipes that operate passively are used to transport heat
between the source to the local dissipation or heat sink, present
an important role also in the thermal control of terrestrial and
space systems. A literature review was performed addressing the
state of the art of passive thermal control devices such as
thermosyphons, capillary pumping loops, loop heat pipes and
variable conductance heat pipes are some examples of passive
thermal control devices. Within this category, open loop pulsating
heat pipes have attracted a growing interest within the thermal
control engineering due to their relative simple fabrication, low
weight, low cost and it can be installed into small spaces inside
of systems where they are required to transfer heat. Recent
studies have reported recent cases of application of pulsating
heat pipes in space missions, as well as surveillance and ground
missions. This study investigated the components that comprise
this device, specifications of materials and fluids used in their
manufacturing with their scopes and limitations. The purpose was
to understand and describe the operation as well as the
fundamental principles governing the two-phase flow regimes
present in operation of open loop pulsating heat pipes. An
experimental research was carried out by testing, which was
obtained and assembled a database , duly registered in graphs
derived from the evaluation of the behavior of different working
fluids previously selected operating in an open loop pulsating
heat pipe. With the theoretical framework developed from the
research carried out in two-phase flow and database generated
through the experimental procedures, arrangements were made to
establish the necessary tools for open loop pulsating heat pipes
development. The results obtained by applying the tools of this
project proposals were compared with the obtained results during
tests performed to validate the accuracy and determination on its
application, presenting satisfactory results within an errors of
1\% (min.) and 35,7\% (max.).",
